If you're planning to join the Service Unit team or need a refresher course for your position, the Council is running several courses this spring:

GS101

There's a new online course that is required for all new Girl Scout leaders. Our council is recommending that all experienced leaders also go online and take the course. It's a wonderful refresher course and gives you an idea of the new things that Girl Scouts USA is bringing to our scouts. Click on the button to open a page of instructions.

CPR/First Aid

At least one member of your troop must be trained in CPR and First Aid. While you don't need this training for a regular troop meeting, any time you leave your regular meeting place, the CPR & First Aid trained adult must accompany you (which is why it's often easier for the troop leaders to take this training). Training can be done through several different methods (see list below). NEW for 2012: ALL leaders must be trained in CPR & First Aid.

Training is effective for two years. Please fax or scan/email copies of your CPR/First Aid cards/certificates to the SUMs.

This information is also explained in the new Volunteer Essentials book on the GSofCT.org web site.

Outdoor Training

If you want to take your troop out for more than 4 hours, the first course you should take is Out and About. This course is available online. The second course, Fire, Food, & Fun, teaches the basics of building a fire, simple cooking techniques, and (of course) s'mores. Lastly, Camping Adventures, gives the leader or parent volunteer the skills to take the girls on outdoor camping trips, plus advanced outdoor cooking techniques. Click on the button below for a flyer describing all the available training.

Outdoor Training Pyramid: These courses will give you the rules and skills you need to lead your troop outside your normal meeting location, ranging from a basic day hikes to overnight excursions.
Core Leadership Requirements: These are the steps you follow to become a fully trained leader.
